Photoshop Videos
1. In the first video, “Take a tour of the Photoshop work area,” the narrator explains that all of the tools are displayed on the left hand side and that the bar on the top edge of the screen demonstrates your options for each tool. This bar changes when you select a new tool to use. For the paintbrush tool it will show you the option to change the stroke shape, size, and opacity; but by selecting a new tool you change your options available.
2. In the article “About Photoshop Layers” the topic of how and why to use layers in photoshop is discussed. Layers are a way to place images above or below other images in the same photoshop file by putting them on layers. This way you can show one object in front of another. It can also be used to separate the effects of different tools. Say you only want to make the background of a picture brighter, you can separate the foreground and background and only edit the background layer. You can also link layers together, which enables them to be dragged together.
3. In the videos about making selections they explain the different tool options for selecting parts of your image layer. The lasso tool is the least precise, but it allows you to select an image buy tracing a line around what you want to select as long as you loop around and connect to your starting point. The quick selection tool allows you to select by shape, based on the colored pixels. The computer system selects this for you but you can then deselect certain parts and then refine your edge before completing the selection. There are also tools like the marquee tool which makes a basic shaped selection, or the magic wand tool that selects by colored pixels.
4. The first video group that I chose was “Select and change colors”. I believe that knowing how to use the color changing tools like paintbrush in color mode helps further the visual balance of any composition. The color replacement tool can also have similar effects. I selected the video “Use brush tool” to show an example of how colors can be changed in photoshop. Tools like color balance and hue/saturation can also impact the picture as a whole in order to tint or alter the colors.

The second video I chose was “How to crop and straighten a photo to improve composition”. This is a necessary first step to create a strong image. If you need to make an image level before beginning to edit then this is how you do it. You can use tools like crop, which hides part of your image, and also has a straighten tool within it. You can also use image rotation or edit> transform> rotate to rotate your whole image or one layer, respectively. This will be incredibly helpful when you want an object tilted to the left a bit more, or to straighten the image out.

The last video I chose was “Hide unwanted content with the Patch tool”. I chose this video because it was something I haven’t tried to use all that much and because I wanted to learn more about it. By using patch under source, you can replace a selected image with that of another area on your image. This allows for unwanted background objects to be blended away into empty space, and replaced with a different image. This can help with unwanted objects in the image and can soften the look of any distractions.
