Art and New Media

 1. The paper focuses on what can be used to teach art to students, including using outside media to explain visual culture to students. This relates to the course because we use digital media and technology to understand ways to teach children about visual culture. The paper gives examples of what could be used and what has been used to teach children to use art to better understand and express cultural topics through visuals. 2. I do agree with Duncum that visual culture is like a rhizome, in that it can begin as something small and spread out in different directions and continue to grow. Depending on who, what, or where the visual culture is based, it affects what it develops into. Like brainstorming, where you begin with one thought then connect lines off to another idea and another, culture acts the same way, and as a result visual culture follows. 3. For each video, what was discussed that  you think will be the most helpful in creating your Digital Portfolio? What challenges did you encounter while creating your portolio and how did you over come them? What do you think of your finished portfolio? 1. From the information in: "Creating an InDesign Portfolio for print, PDF, and the iPad", I think that I will definitely use "new color swatch", create frames and obviously switch picas to inches. From, "Adding your Work to an InDesign portfolio", I would use file-place to add images, and I could determine how much space I want between paragraphs. From, "Publishing Print and Interactive PDF Portfolios", I can take preflight to find anywhere that text is overlapping or off the page.  2. I haven't finished yet but I've only had trouble with exactly what to write, not trouble with the program. 3. I can't really answer this yet, but I'm happy with it so far.

1. My artist is Bill Viola and he creates videos that are auditory and visually stimulating. I chose this artist because he and his art seemed the most interesting out of the few new art artists I researched. I prefer videography over 3D printing and digital animation and thought that he had a lot of work I could talk about. 2. The only problem I had was finding the videos he created because none of them are publicly published by him. Anything that I've found is either a snip bit from what is his art, or a video filmed of the videos he has created. I found the best quality ones and used them, sometimes I found them on accident too. I couldn't find just an audio file at all, so I included more short videos instead that have audio in them. 3. I enjoyed trying to find images that I saw in the video trailers of his work, everything was a hunt but I enjoyed it when I found a good image still. I didn't enjoy trying to decide on animations and transitions, but I was indecisiv...

1. Visual culture is the anthropology around and behind artwork. It includes subcultures and groups otherwise not really represented in life. It is the reason behind art movements and the affects each movement has on the art world as a whole. And it all works together like an organism, independent creativity but interconnected at the same time. 2. Some of the things June McFee talks about and stands for that reflect on today are looking after the kid's and their behavior and paying attention to their state of being, how they are doing pyscologically. Every year it seems that more and more children need to improve their mental health and I think that will continue and is important to pay attention to. 3-6. I have already heard of zines, but just as a mini booklet of an art portfolio, I didnt know thrre was this culture behind it too. The Sticker Book that was based around this idea that you can grow up with cartoon princesses and other crazy out of reality characters, that are meant to support creativity but then can't actually use them creatively because of copyright. Antonio's work ultimately uses these images creatively, altering them to the point of clearly not infringing but still fully recognizable. 2. Have you heard of Banksy before reading these materials for class? If so, what do you think of his work. If not, would you like to know more about him? What do you think of the "Balloon Girl / Love is in the Bin" "incident"  at Sotheby's? What are your thoughts on the references/memes based on this work? How would/could you use Banksy's artworks in your art classroom? 1. Before this assignment, I had already known who Banksy was. I already enjoyed his work, and invested time into finding out what he does. I think his work is sometimes a little edgy but not ever aggressive or rude, just to the point. He creates graffiti-style works that explain the imperfections of political socioeconomic part of life, and societal expectations, while poking fun at them too. The only thing I want to know is what is his background, not even his name or his life, just maybe where did he grow up, how old is he, does his art have anything to do with race or background? ...

1.  The installation I enjoyed the most was the one that included two images of projected light, facing one another, in the shape of a cone that displayed as a circle on the wall. This installation seemed to be the most interactive. It was something you could walk through, enter, and be part of. You got to see how the light bends and shifts, or where it lands when you stand in it. Personally, I believe  it was the strongest piece in the exhibit of McCall's. If I could chose a shape to represent me it wouldn't be the image projected on to the wall, but the tunnel created by the light and smoke in the room. I choose the tunnel because it had movement, it was shifting and at the same time still. In life right now I feel like I'm evolving a lot while feeling like I'm in the same place I was before, I'm changing but my life is still continuing slowly.
